Jullinen, V. | Lilover, L. | Roosmaa, U. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
The territory of the Republic of Estonia is the smallest (45 230 square m) of all the countries striving for EC accession, the same applies for the population (1.4 million) and total capacity of economy. Still, Estonia is not the poorest country. When we speak about energy consumption per capita, Estonia takes the 5. position among 22 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, gross domestic production (GDP) per capita takes the 9. position (7). Output per agricultural worker takes the third position after Hungary and Czech (2). As for level of urbanisation, Estonia takes the second place (72.8%) after the Russian Federation among comparable countries (75.6% of the population live in towns). Since independence, Estonia has followed a liberal agricultural policy and all border protection measures have been abolished.
