Effect of pipeline milking device ADM on the free fatty acid content
2000
Leola, A. | Henno, M. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
This report deals with the influence of milking process on the milk flavour. Raw milk samples were taken from bulk tanks at different farms monthly from August 1999 to January 2000. The content of free fatty acids (FFA) was measured by copper soap method (IDF Standard 50B/1985). Pipeline milking equipment used on studied farms was divided into two groups: old equipment incorrectly installed systems with 1-4 ascents; reconstructed old equipment with proper slope and removed vertical ascents. Fluctuation of vacuum level in milk line causes agitation and therefore the rise of FFA content. Taking the standard of FFA in raw milk into use in advisory purposes will help to explain the need of regular testing of milking equipment and reconstruction of the old ones which lead to the improvement of raw milk quality.
