Inspection and clearance procedures of forest products at North Harbor Port of Manila: an evaluation [Philippines]

This study was conducted to determine how to improve the entry, inspection and clearing of forest products shipped and/or transhipped to North Harbor, Port of Manila [Philippines]. A survey questionnaire was the major tool in data gathering from 98 respondents of three different professional categories. To analyze the respondents perception on the effectiveness of the inspection and clearing procedures of forest products entering North Harbor, Port of Manila, respondents were selected randomly from among the personnel of DENR-NCR [Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region, Philippines], the movements of forest products; licensees or shippers and consignees of forest products. Using the Likert scale, the respondents by age group, sex, marital status, educational background, religious affiliation and number of years in the business/service were converted into weighed mean and to determine whether the demographic profile of the respondents grouped according to professional category and statistically significant, the F-test was employed. Also, included in the study are the present functions of the Forest Utilization and Law Enforcement Division, DENR/NCR, their status of accomplishment in the clearing and inspection of forest products such as logs/poles/piles, lumber and rattan and record of over shipment of forest products together with the volume and present value from 1994 to 1997. Some problems in the delay of shipment of forest products arriving at North Harbor, Port of Manila, were given by the respondents including some possible solutions to improve the entry, inspections and clearance procedure of forest products coming from the Philippine ports
