This study was conducted to determine the normal serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), glucose, total protein (TP) blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in captive Philippine cynomolgus monkeys. The effect of sex, age, weight, pregnancy and lactation were also studied. Two hundred forty three monkeys of both sexes, various ages and weights and reproductive conditions were used in the study. Serum were analyzed using an automatic blood analyzer. Results of the biochemical analyses showed no significant differences in the mean serum valves between males and females except in glucose levels wherein it is significantly higher among females (P0.05). When the monkeys were grouped by weight, there was also no significant differences in serum valves among weight groups except for glucose and BUN. The youngest group, those less than five years old, showed significantly lower glucose level than those 5, 6 and 8 years old. Those 10-year old and older, the oldest group, showed a significantly higher BUN level, than the youngest group and those aged 6 years. As to pregnancy and lactation status, the data depict that the mean level of AST of lactating monkeys was significantly lower than the pregnant and non-pregnant/non-lactating mothers. In addition, the mean ALT and BUN levels were significantly higher and lower, respectively, than the other groups. Results of the study showed some significant variations in the mean biochemical values by sex, age, weight and pregnancy and lactation status. The normal serum reference values obtained in the present study is a useful tool for the veterinary clinician and biomedical researcher who use Philippine monkeys as experimental animals. However, in interpreting these values, factors such as those studied in this research should be considered
