Verification trial on the growth rate of Eucheuma alvarezii between submerged and raft methods in Zambales waters [Philippines]
1999

Results of the first trial planting in 1995 using raft method showed that the area is suited for seaweed farming with a daily growth rate of 4.75 percent and survival rate of 86.01 percent. Comparing the results of the first trial planting with that of the second and third trials in 1996 wherein both methods were used, lower survival and negative growth rates were noted. Initial weight of 100 g for the raft method decreased by 0.41 percent for the second and third trials. Likewise, seaweeds planted under submerged method for second and third trials also decreased by 0.81 percent and 0.79 percent, respectively. The low survival and negative growth rates in 1996 test planting could be attributed to the presence of pollutants and wastes in the experimental site as affected by the construction and implementation of NAPOCOR [National Power Corporation] Geothermal Power Plant in the adjacent barangay [village]
