Developing a cost-effective sampling design for multivariable water quality monitoring
1999
Obalan, E.P.
The methodology was applied to Tadlac Lake in Los Banos, Laguna [Philippines] using three water quality variables, namely: total nitrogen, phosphorus and total suspended solids. Based on the stations' scores on the first five main axes derived from correspondence analysis, the lake was divided into five homogeneous zones. Nitrogen content was found to be high in the northern and southern parts and low in the eastern section. Phosphorous and total suspended solids were both found to be high in the west and low in the east. With the five homogeneous zones as the upper bound on the number of stations and an assumed limited budget, a cost-efficient sampling design was determined for detecting an abrupt change of thirty percent from the mean value
