[Maiotic behaviour of Portuguese tetraploid wheats]
1998
Romano, M.C.S.
The objective of this study was to analyse the course of meiotic divisions in the pollen mother cells of seventeen durum wheat cultivars belonging to the Portuguese Wheat Collection. The chromosomic pairing was high and the number of univalents was reduced in all cultivars. Some cells of 'Preto de Tavira' were observed to have ring or chain quadrivalents 'Russo' and 'Marroquino Preto' had a low percentage of hipoploid cells. The meiotic index was high in all cultivars, except in 'Mongia? that has the lowest meiotic index. So these cultivars have cytological stability. The spike fertility in some cultivars ('Lobeiro de Grao Escuro', 'Durazio Molar Glabro?, 'Alexandre? and 'Santa Marta?) was under 60% 'Durazio Rijo Glabro? and 'Amarelejo? have high spike fertility and also the highest grain number and grain weight per spike. 'Javardo? has the highest 1000 grain weight
