[Characterisation of the "Cobrancosa", "Cordovil de Serpa", "Conserva de Elvas", "Macanilha" and "Picual" olive varieties in the region of Castelo Branco [Portugal]]

The aim of the present work is the characterization of six olive-tree varieties (Olea europaea L) - Azeiteira, Macanilha, Conserva de Elvas, Picual, Cobrancosa and Cordovil de Serpa - in the region of Castelo Branco. The similarities and difference between vegetative and productive characteristics of every variety were studied in 1997. The biometric parameters of fruits and leaves were also analysed. The olives were harvested when the ripening index was higher than 2.6. Yield indexes were determined and olive oil was obtained using an Abencor equipment. The fatty acid composition, acidity and UV absorbance of the olive oils were determined. The variety Cobrancosa showed the best productive characteristics as well as high fat content and good quality olive oil

O presente trabalho pretende caracterizar as variedades de oliveira (Olea europaea L.) - Azeiteira, Macanilha, Conserva de Elvas, Picual, Cobrancosa e Cordovil de Serpa - na regiao de Castelo Branco. Efectuou-se o estudo das caracteristicas vegetativas e produtivas e dos parametros biometricos dos frutos e folhas, durante a campanha 97/98. Procedeu-se a colheita total dos frutos, a determinacao dos indices de rendimento e a extraccao do azeite em equipamento Abencor. Caracterizaram-se os azeites elementares pela composicao em acidos gordos, acidez e absorvancias no ultravioleta. A variedade Cobrancosa apresentou as melhores caracteristicas produtivas, um bom rendimento em gordura e azeite elementar de boa qualidade
