In the soil samples collected from the top soils in surrounding of Ziar nad Hronom (Central Slovakia), organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon and total nitrogen was determined. Soil organic matter in particle-size fractions was also investigated. Soil samples were dispersed using high-energy sonification and separated into four size fractions by a wet sieving. The content of organic carbon in the soil samples on pasture was in comparison to arable soils. Also dissolved organic carbon on pasture was higher contrary to arable soils. The highest content of organic carbon and total nitrogen were generally found in the finest clay fraction. The C-to-N ratio of the fractions typically decreased from coarser to finer sizes, reflecting the mineralization and humification status of the soil organic matter. In our soil samples the narrowest ratio C-to-N from 8 to 11, which represent medium supply of nitrogen in organic matter, was found in the clay fraction
