We evaluated the nutritional value of the certificated variety of horse bean - Omar and the new variety SPIV-46 which were bred in the Breeding Station Horna Streda. The varieties were harvested in 1995 and 1996. The variety SPIV-6 with white flowers has higher content of crude protein and higher proportion of proteins. Markedly greater difference between varieties was in the concentration of tannin than of the trypsin inhibitor. We determined in the biological experiment with rats that the presence of higher content of tannins influences negatively the digestibility of crude protein (P0.05). Other parameters (BHB, PER) were higher (P0.05) when the variety Omar was fed and the N excretion by urine was significantly lower (P0.01 ) which show better utilization of nitrogen from the seeds of Omar variety than from the seeds of new variety SPIV-46 with low tannin content. We did not find significant differences in any of the parameters between the years of cultivation
