Sugar beet - actual situation and perspectives in Slovakia

The large changes within the Slovak agriculture have been carried out also in the sugar beet cropping system as well as in sugar industry. Technical sugar beet collecting areas fluctuated from 33.3 ths hectares in 1993 to 48.3 ths hectares in 1997. In 1999 the total sowing areas decreased on 35.7 ths hectars. The yield of roots and digestion in the Slovak Republic are lower comparing to EU countries. The average root yields fluctuated from 34.31 t/ha in 1992 to 43.62 t/ha in 1999. At the beginning of 90-ties relatively low sugar beet yields caused a deficit in the sugar production. During our almost two-hundred-year tradition the Slovak Republic reached self-sufficiency in sugar till from 1996. Also the technological quality of sugar beet is not on expected level.
