Developmental stages of various parasites of earthworms are found very frequently in nature as well as in captivity. For instance Protozoa from the genus Monocystis are specific parasites occurring in the seminal glands of earthworms. They probably rank among natural regulators of the earthworm population as severe impairment of seminal glands may shorten the length of host life, interrupt its reproduction and finally cause its death. Earthworms also serve as intermediate hosts of parasites of important domestic and free-living mammals and birds. The role of earthworms in agriculture is discussed as well
