The aim of the measurements was to evaluate the shape and size properties of sugar beet seeds as well as the seeding possibilities of planters with mechanical seed-metering device (MECA 2000 and SELECTA 585 seeding machines). A work speed of machine between 1 and 2 m/s and four sorts of sugar beet seed (A, B, C, D) from two suppliers were used for tests. Measurements were done in accordance with ISO 7256/1 standard, both under laboratory and "insitu" conditions. The results indicated significant differences in shape and size even among the seeds of the same calibration, which affects quality of seeding. It was observed that both of the tested planters with a standard device are only able to ensure the quality sowing of the seeds calibrated by a width in the range of 3.5 to 4.75 mm, keeping the required seed spacing (94.1-99.7%). The sowing machine MECA 2000 was found to clearly provide higher quality of seeding in terms of distance variability of seeds but especially that of plants. With proper seed calibration, either of planters caused low or no damage to seeds
