Comparison on growth and yield of Basmati rice on farmer's field to determine the suitable varieties for planting in Nan area. The experiment was conducted at Ban Hatket, Muangjang district, Amphur Muang, Nan province. Four replications in randomized complete block with 6 treatments (lines/varieties) was used in experimental design. The conducting period was 6 months, starting in July 1994, ending in December 1994. The results showed that Basmati no.4 (BMT 4) gave the highest yield of 496.16 kg/rai, whereas the standard variety, BMT 6 gave the lowest yield of 314.15 kg/rai. Nevertheless, BMT 4 gave the highest number of panicle per hill (11.33 panicle per hill) and number of seed per panicle (151.71 seed/panicle) whereas BMT 1 showed the lowest number of panicle per hill (9 panicle per hill) and BMT 6 showed the lowest number of seed per panicle (75.80 seeds per panicle) which were statistically significant difference. But there was no significant difference in percentage of filled grain and 1,000 grains weight.
