Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV), a member of the plant Reoviridae, causes severe disease and economic loss in rice cultivation in Thailand. The main objective of the project is to produce transgenic rice with viral genome based synthetic resistance genes. RRSV genome consisting of 10 dsRNA segments with totally of 26 Kd and at least 5 structural proteins. The molecular weight of these proteins were 120 Kd, 110 Kd, 71 Kd, 51 Kd and 35 Kd. We are able to clone and find that dsRNA segment 9 codes for the 35 Kd protein. Direct gene transfer through microprojectile bombardment of suspension rice cells is under investigated.
