Ikat fabric design by Auto CAD program

Objective of this research was to study the method of designing ikat fabric by using Auto CAD program. Three ikat motifs were used: Mee Kom Jed, Mee Bai Pai and Mee Kho. Design drafts were prepared by the use of Auto CAD program and graph paper. Twenty weavers of Banjarn Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center, Sakonnakhon province were asked to make the fabrics according to the design drafts prepared. Dimensions of ikat motifs appeared on the actual fabrics were measured using Digimatic Caliper. The results of this study indicated that the Auto CAD program was successfully applied for ikat fabric designing. Time used for tying ikat motifs was not different when either the drafts prepared by the Auto CAD program or the drafts prepared by the graph paper were used. It was observed that both widthwise and lengthwise dimensions of the three motifs appeared on the actual fabrics were not different from the expected ones when the drafts prepared by the Auto CAD program were used. The widthwise dimensional differences were large when the drafts prepared by the graph paper were used. Statistical analysis indicated that the lengthwise dimensional differences between the motifs on the actual fabrics and the expected ones of each method were not significant at .05 level. Whereas the widthwise dimension differences were significant at .01 level.
