The influence of mechanically-induced stress on the growth of a range of vegetable crops

The effect of mechanically-induced stress on plant growth of aubergine (Solanum melongena L. Cv. Murena F1 RS), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Melani F1 RS), melon (Cucumis melo L. Cv. Polidor F1 RS), and pepper (Capsicum annum L. Cv. California Wonder) was investigated. In the first experiment, brushing nearly germinated seedlings with a stick for 50 brushing cycles once daily and twice daily resulted in smaller, more compact plants than unbrushed controls. In all four species stem length was reduced by both treatments. Aubergine, cucumber and pepper showed almost the same response to MIS in terms of stem length, fresh weight and dry weight. Although the leaf number of aubergine, cucumber and pepper was reduced, the leaf number of melon increased using both treatments
