Natural-stand Rhizophora apiculata saplings with heights between 2-3 meters in mangrove areas of Satun and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces were studied along with planted seedlings. Internodal lenght along the main stem of thirty natural stand saplings from each area were measured, then moving average method was used to analyse the collected data in order to reduce long-term and short-term trend effects. Plots of internodal lenght versus node number of the individual sapling clearly showed an annual periodicity of internodal lenght variations. Number of nodes in each periodic cycle represented nodes produced per year of that sapling. The average annual node production of R. apiculata at mangrove edge of western coast of Laem Ta Lumpuk, Pak Phanang district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province was 7.61+-0.3 and at the mangrove area in front of the Mangrove Seed Production Center, Satun province was 7.89+-0.18. Seventy-two seedlings at the uniform age of 6 months with 40-70 cm in height were randomly planted under different levels of sediment accretion at the mangrove edge of Laem Ta Lumpuk. Seedling height, number of nodes and mortality rate were monitored over a one year period (April 1995 - April 1996). Growth rate of seedlings with no sediment accretion was 0.091+-0.01 centimeter per day, and this rate decreased linearly at a rate of 2.6 percent per centimeter of sediment deposit. Mortality rates of seedlings received 16 and 32 cm of sediment in the first 3 months were 33 percent and 58 percent, respectively. However, there was no significant change in the rate of node production with sediment accretion. Average annual node production of the survival seedlings was 7.29+-0.35 which was quite similar to those obtained from nutural stand saplings.
