Nicolin, G. (Compagnie Usiniere de Belle Vue Ltd., Belle Vue Mauricia Sugar Estate, Mapou (Mauritius))
In Mauritius, rock picking in stony and gravelly soils is necessary to avoid accelerated wear and tear on base cutter knives and chopper blades of harvesters. This presentation illustrates the different equipment used after stool eradication and during land preparation to bring to the surface a maximum amount of rock and stones from the top 20 cm of the soil. The rocks and stones are windrowed to facilitate collection by machines and improve the productivity of the rock pickers. The machine hours and the cost of each operation per ha, as well as their impact on labor employed to do final hand rock picking for plant cane, are also given.
