Experiment of randomized complete block design with 11 treatments and 4 replications was conducted in Pathumthani Rice Research Center in 1995/96 rainy season to evaluate the effects of cultivation methods and split application of phosphate fertilizer on Azolla production and its effects to rice production. The Azolla was inoculated 20 days before transplanting and at 6 days of transplanting as dual culture with rice applied with or without urea - nitrotgen (N) to rice. The results showed that maximum N and biomass of Azolla was produced when Azolla was applied with phosphorus (P) by split application method. Azolla biomass production was not affected by Azolla cultivation methods. Dry matter production and N-uptake by rice plants were significantly increased when Azolla was applied with P by split application method (2 or 4 times). Azolla incorporation of 23 t/ha of biomass at transplanting along with urea-N (37.5 kg/ha) resulted in the highest grain yield production. This yield was observed quite similar tto the yield produced by Azolla when inoculated after transplanting and not incorporated at the same level of urea - N and P application methods. N content in the grains was found increased when the rice crop was fertilized by both Azolla and urea - N. Nitrogen and organic matter content in the soil was slightly increased as compared to that of soil before Azolla inoculation.
