The development of new powdery and downy mildew-resistant cvs. showing standart quality characteristics by cross-breeding

Resistance breeding programme has been going on since 1986 at Tekirdag Viticultural Research Institute. The aim of this project is to breed powdery and downy mildew resistant cultivars that have standart quality features V. vinifera varieties were pollinated by some resistant varieties from the northeast of Anatolia. Within the period of 1987 to 1986 fortysix crossings were realized and 13735 seeds were gained. Approximately 1100 F1 plants were tested in the glasshouse between 1990 and 1995 in the terms of resistance and quality. Disease severity index and correlation between the resistance degree of the leave and berries for various crossings were determined. Correlation coefficient for all F1 plants in the glasshouse was determined as 0,44. Taking into selection criterea concerning resistance and quality features, 14 strains were propagated for further tests. At the end of sensory evaluations, Amasya Beyazi X 28/259-10, Usuvi X 28/259-4, Amasya Beyazi X 28/259-1 and Italia X 28/259-8 were selected. On the other hand, two F1 parcels were established at the field in 1995-1996 and 1997. Observations has been going on at these parcels
