The impact of education on the income of farm owners in Trinidad: with a comparison of the educational levels of farm owners with other occupational groups

Examines the influence of the level of education on farm holders on their earning potential given the evidence in data from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) that farming was the lowest income earning industrial group in 1982. Looks at the extent of the difference in educational attainment between farm holders and persons in other occupational groups. Two hypotheses were tested. The first was that education impacts significantly on farm income, while the second is that the level of formal education on farm holders is lower than that of persons in other occupations. The major data sources used were: CSO, Agricultural Census Report of Trinidad and Tobago, 1982 as well as the computerized records of the census; CSO, Household Budgetary Survey, 1981-1982; and CSO,CSSP Special Labour Force Report, 1982. A log-linear, single equation model was constructed and Ordinary Least Squares Multiple Regression analysis was used to test the first hypothesis. The second hypothesis was tested by the use of Chi-square tests of differences between observed and expected frequencies. Both hypotheses were supported by the results of the tests conducted.
