Studies on multiplication of 'Gros Michel' and Cavendish bananas by tissue culture and development after transplant

Result revealed banana tissue cultured on MS liquid media to develop more rapidly than those on solid one in 60 days. While on liquid media Hom Khieo Kom yielded the greatest amount of 843.79 suckers, on solid media it was Grand Nain with 86.87 suckers. It was also found that 3 different levels of concentration of media with BA did not affect periods of regeneration (9.26-9.68 days) or number of suckers. Hom Thong Taiwan was noticed to regenerate the longest of 12.10 days, and Grand Nain produced the most number of suckers (2.49). When transplanted to growing media, 35.40 percent of plantlets in Scot Media 1 were found dead, while in formula of sand: organic fertilizer, the greatest of 71.48 percent mortality was encountered. Height, weight and number of leaves were revealed to increase to 13.62 cm., 6.10 gm and 2.79 leaves respectively in Scot Media 1, whereas Hom Khieo Kom had the best development in the above characters. As for height of banana grown in the fields, Grand Nain was noticed to be the shortest of 75.05 cm and Hom Khieo the tallest of 83.96 cm. The greatest (27.45 cm) and smallest (22.29 cm) circumferences were found in Hom khieo Kom and Hom Thong respectively. Whereas Hsien Jen Chiao and Williams had the greatest and smallest number of leaves of 29 and 26 respectively. The results showed the application of chemical fertilizer no accelerate more growth of banana than without application: For example, height increased between 65.24-70.87 cm, circumferences 18.33-20.77. Fertilizer formula 14-9-20 applied once a month made the greatest height and circumferences with number of leaves between 22.10-23.00. Two applications of the same formula per month revealed the greatest number of leaves. The development in height and circumference of every banana clones with or without fertilizer was parallel to convex curve and number of leaves linear curve. Fertilization on disease damage also showed Highgate to get the least percent infection of 16.67, and chemical fertilizer application caused between 65.28 to 81.98 percent infection. Damage in leaves breakage was noticed most in Hom Tong Taiwan while Grand Nain and Hsien Jen Chaio the least.
