Sugarcane seedlings derived from US 65-4 * UT 1 and CP 52-68 * CN 1 were tested in 1992 Selection 1 Trial. The purpose of the trial was to select smut resistant clones and also have good agronomic traits. Seedlings were inoculated with a spore suspension (5*10*[6) spores/ml) by bud puncture technique before transplanted into the field. The number of infected stools had been increased from 15.1 and 9.4 % to 39.9 and 34.4 % in US65-4 * UT1 and CP52-68 * CN 1, respectively. Mycelium detection at meristematic tissue indicated that 76.1 and 93.7 % of seedlings from both crosses, respectively, were infected. However, only 44.0 and 36.7 % of seedlings which found mycelium, respectively, showed smut symptom in the field. These results may indicated that clones which showed no symptom may classify as having physiological resistance. From smut evaluation and agronomic data, 48 clones were selected for further study. The selected clones were consisted of 27 clones from US 65-4 * UT1 and 21 clones from CP 52-68 * CN1.
