Some characteristics of wrinkled seed coat peanut

Wrinkleness of peanut seed coat is often found in large-seeded peanut. Percentages of the wrinkled seeds are depend upon among variety and environmental condition. Study on anatomical structure of wrinkled peanut seed coat in the two large seeded peanut varieties, Khon Kaen 60-3 and Kasetsart 1 and a small -seeded variety, Tainan 9 revealed that the two large-seeded varieties were higher in percentages of wrinkled seed than Tainan 9. Seed coat thickness and seed moisture content decreased as the seed reached maturity. Wrinkled seed coats were thinner than the non-wrinkled ones. Wrinkleness of peanut seed coat was caused by the curvature of the seed coat surface along the vascular bundles resulted in the more external surface area of the wrinkled seed. Wrinkled seeds were high in seed moisture content, firsts count germination and germination index indicated faster germination of the wrinkled seed than the normal seed, but lower in seed vigor as determined by the conductivity test. However, after four-month storage seed vigor of the wrinkled seed coat peanut was lower than the non-wrinkled peanut seed. During the early germination process, wrinkled seeds imbibed water faster than the non-wrinkled seeds. No difference in field emergence was found among the wrinkled and non wrinkled peanut seeds planted at different planting depth. Planting depth at 5 centimeter showed faster germination than at 7.5 and 10 centimeter. However seedling dry weights of the non-wrinkled seeds were higher than wrinkled seeds indicated the slow early seedling growth and development of the wrinkled seeds than the non-wrinkled ones.
