Results obtained by studying the reduced temperature effect on growth response and metabolic processes in soybean shoots are summarized. The dynamics of changes in the content of the substances present in cotyledons as well as the hydrolytic enzyme and dehydrogenase activities in cotyledons and roots are determined. The intensity of energy in the adaptative processes studied is shown to be lower in the soybeans of a cold-resistant variety than in a non-cold resistant one under the effect of the reduced temperatures. At the same time in the first hours of the stress the starch, oils and various soluble sugars content are found to reduce more intensively in a cold-resistant variety. In a non-cold resistant variety the protein catabolism is more expressed whereas in a cold resistant one their synthesis. The difference revealed is supposed to cause the different effectiveness of adaptation to lower temperatures in the shoots studied
