The optimal dosages and times of nitrogen application for maize lines fertilization were investigated. Seven maize lines (115/II NS, 21 NS-1, 123/II NS, 346 A-NS, 200 NS, 568 NS and 20 NS DxF) with the following nutrition variants: 0 (control), 60 kg of N in the autumn, 60 kg of N in the autumn + 60 kg of N in the spring, 120 kg of N in the autumn + 120 kg of N in the spring were included in the trials. Samples of leaves for investigation of physiological parameters were taken at the stage of seven fully developed leaves. The following parameters were studied: total leaf area, content of chloroplast pigments, intensity of gross photosynthesis, nitrate reductase activity, number of stomata, and after maize harvesting the yield of kernels was calculated. The studied parameters depended first of all on genotype than on nitrogen dosages applied to soil, while time of nitrogen application was of a great significance.
