In the present work, the protective effect of sulphur (S) on the content of chloroplast pigments, photosynthesis and growth of plants exposed to cadmium (Cd)-induced stress was investigated. Young sugar beet plants (Beta vulgaris L.), hybrid NS-Hy 11, were differently supplied with S (0, 1 or 3 mM) and Cd (0, 1 or 100 microM) and dry mass, contents of chlorophylls a+b and carotenoids as well as photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll fluorescence and quenching parameters were determined. The results support the evidence that S nutrition is important factor in regulating plant growth, photosynthesis and tolerance to Cd toxicity.
