Sustainable animal production systems. An approach from the farm diversity and operation patterns at a territory level

Livestock production systems in France experimenting locally crisis situations are emphasized from several research-development studies. The ways toward sustainability for these systems are analysed by confronting the diversity of local production systems, the operation of the farms, and their spatial structure according to long term changes in the characteristics of the regional territory. Effectiveness of a development programme at the farm level for improved sustainability is experimented in various localities in France. The experiment takes into account the methodological lessons of the reported research-development actions in order to achieve sustainable land use.
