Effect of melatonin on puberty in lambs

A total of 22 prepubertal female lambs of the "Staroplaninski Tsigai" breed at the age of 6 months were allocated in two groups. A daily dose of 3 mg melatonin was given per os with the fourage to the lambs of the first group (n=11) for 30 days. Blood samples were taken from all the animals at weekly intervals and plasma progesterone levels were determined by RIA. Results indicate that the treatment with 3 mg of exogenious melatonin dose not accelerate the onset of puberty in prepubertal lambs of the "Staroplaninski Tsigai" breed.
