The protected denomination of origin and geographical indication legislation were engaged in 1997 in Switzerland after a European regulation. This legislation fosters and encourages the manufacture of value-added products in decentralised regions often experiencing low economic outputs and increases their competitiveness on the market. A number of socio-economic and cultural benefits emerge from such an approach.
