Effect of light restriction on early developmental stages of Clarias gariepinus
2000
Appelbaum, S. (Ben Gurion Univ. of the Negev (Israel). The Bengis Centre for Desert Aquaculture) | Kamler, E.
Four groups of C. gariepinus were reared for 40 days, each in duplicate: LL, DL, LD and DD, where the first letter (L or D) stands for the conditions during yolk feeding (continuous light or total darkness, respectively), and the second letter - for the conditions during external feeding. Survival during external feeding was higher in darkness than in light. Fish reared in dark were heavier than those reared in light. In dark, the ratio of total metabolism to body growth (both expressed in terms of energy) was depressed. During the 5th and 6th weeks postfertilization the biomass of fish reared in dark was about 175 % of that in fish reared in light.
