The tree planting and amelioration experiment has been established in the central part of Jizerske hory Mts. At the altitude of about 960 m a.s.l. in 1991-1996. One of the aims of the experiment is the testing of liming effects on the growth and development of new tree plantations. Two different ways of limiting were tested: 1. spreading of the fine-milled dolomitic limestone (FMDL) on the soil surface around the trees just after plantation, 2. mixing FMDL with the soil in the planting point. The short term effects on the Norway spruce (Picea abies) plantation, on the soil and tree quality and growth were evaluated. Soil chemistry was positively affected as well as the plantation growth and condition. The natural regeneration of pioneer tree species was also favourably affected by the performed liming. Possible negative trends (mineralization of humus and nitrogen, leaching of potassium) demand further research.
