Fish poisoning with cyanides
2000
Svobodova, Z. (Jihoceska Univ., Vodnany (Czech Republic). Vyzkumny Ustav Rybarsky a Hydrobiologicky)
This review paper is a reaction to one of the most serious ecological catastrophes which happened in rivers Lapus, Somos, Tisa and Danube in January 2000. It was caused by spill of mud containing cyanides and metals from a sedimentation lagoon for storage of waste from a gold mine near to a Romanian town Baia Mare. The paper reports other serious cases of accidental fish kills due to poisoning by cyanides, both in an international and national scale. The goal is to attract the attention to a still persisting danger of spills of cyanides-containing wastewaters into aquatic ecosystems with all the consequencies.
