The influence of growth retardants and nitrogen fertilization on chemical composition of winter triticale grain

The field experiment was conducted at Zawady Experimental Station of University of Podlasie in three vegetative seasons (1990/1991, 1991/1992, 1992/1993) on light, soil classified as fluvisols. The effects of three factors were tested: nitrogen fertilization on three levels (50, 100, 150 kg N/ha), type of retardant (Bercema CCC, Flordimex T, control), variety of winter triticale (Grado, Presto, Ugo). The grain samples were analyzed for total protein content (N x 5.83), using the Kjeldahl method. The same material was used for amino acid analysis on an automatic AA-analyser. Increasing N fertilization levels increased grain total protein concentration significantly. The highest values of essential amino acids (except lysine) were noted for the dose 100 kg N/ha. The level 150 kg N/ha decreased essential amino acids concentration significantly. The effect of retardants on protein concentration was generally negative, but the influence on nutritional value of protein was positive - the sum of essential amino acids increased.
