In the hop garden of the Hop Research Institute, Ltd. at Zatec the effect of trickle irrigation and microsprinkling on the hop growth and yield was evaluated in the years 1995 to 1999. The requirement of supplementary irrigation was proved each year. In trickle irrigation 496 m3.ha-1 on average and in microsprinkling irrigation 1,331 m3.ha-1 were supplied. Irrigation by microsprinklers increased the hop yield by 0.54 t.ha-1 on average, trickle irrigation by 0.33 t.ha-1. The difference in the yields on irrigated variants was statistically significant in two years, in the others the difference was insignificant. Microsprinkling was favourably applied in formation of the habit of hop shrubs, conditioning, thermoregulation effect which led to decrease of air temperature in the area of hop shrub by as much as 5 deg C was proved. Yield efficiency 1 m3 of irrigation water is higher in trickle irrigation (0.68 kg.m-3) compared with irrigation by microsprinkling (0.39 kg.m-3). The consumption of irrigation water for formation of 1 kg of hop is lower by 1.05 m3 in trickle irrigation. The hop cannot be cultivated in the Zatec region profitably without modern economical irrigation.
