A field comparison tests with four varieties rich in starch where carried out in Institute of Field Crop Husbandry of EAU in 1996...1998. To achieve the physiological aegening the potato seed tubers were treated thermally for 48 hours before planting, the temperature used being 30 deg C- that is, so-called 'thermal treatment' - SL. In the second variance, the tubers were not treated thermally 0. We carried out phenological observations during the vegetation period of potatoes. We determined leaf area of potato plants and calculated the leaf area index (LAI), determined the dynamics of tuber yield and leaf area index development and yield of the tubers. The trial described shows that treatment of seed tubers with a thermal treatment has a positive effect, first of all, on the tuber quality and also the yield of late potato varieties. Thermal treatment works well if the potatoes have been stored in very cool facilities and the varietes are latematuring genetically. Fast formation of larger assimilation area was secured by physiologically more mature seed tubers, this also helped along with furrows being covered earlier with plant foliage. Thermal treatment did have certain indirect effect on the quality potato yield
