The experiment included: 1) timothy cvs. Tika (for grazing) and Tia (mainly for cutting systems); 2) smooth bromegrass cv. Tsonalnaja. To clarify the optimum utilization regime 9 different times of the 1st cut was used in the trial: from the 15th of May to the 25th of July, mainly at 7-days intervals. According to the date of the 1st cutting the annual number of cuts by trial treatments varied in the limits of 2-5. Fertilizer background was P 44, K 125 and N 240 kg ha (-1). The testing of cultivars under simulated grazing regime enabled us to estimate their sensitivity to frequent defoliation. The data of the 8th (rainy), 9th (very dry) and 10th harvest years (1998-2000) are presented. The dry matter yield was increased by the reduction in the annual number of cuts: considerably more DM was obtained by 3 or 2 cuts than in the case of 5 or 4 ones. But the crude protein annual yield was of a slight dependence on the frequency of cutting. At that the CP content in DM of grass in the case of 2 or 3 cuttings was considerably lower than the minimum level required for high-producing dairy cows and in such case the proteinrich supplementary feeds are necessary
