Regeneration and silviculture of mixed spruce-birch stands
2001
Jogiste, K. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Forest Research Inst.)
Mixed spruce-birch stands form after clearcut of old spruce stands. Spruce advances regeneration together with fast-growing birch forms in the mixed stand. The structure of mixtures depends on silvicultural treatments. Intensive thinnings during the stand development lead to the stand having spruce and birch in the same canopy layer. Young and densestands with high ratio of birch must be thinned because. Reducing excessive density and ratio of birch yield a better growth of both tree species
