Production under protected cultivation is a relatively recent development in Brazil. Initially, mainly ornamentals were produced. Nowadays also vegetables are grown in greenhouses. The total area under protected cultivation is about 1000 hectares. Various insect and mite pests occur, some are similar as those in other greenhouse countries, others are typical Brazilian pests. Pest control is still mainly by chemicals, which have to be applied at frequencies up to three times per week. Recently, several groups have started research on biological control of pests, a development stimulated mainly by ornamental growers
