Laboratory evaluation of custard apple (Annona squamosa) formulations was shown to be very effective against mulberry pest, Bihar hairy caterpillar (Spilosoma obliqua). Annona oil based formulations were proved to be the best antifeedants followed by Annona seed extracts and leaf based formulations. All these botanicals were compared with neem pesticide. The antifeedant effect of Annona products was more on silkworm as compared to Bihar hairy caterpillar at same concentration. However the residual toxicity to silkworm lasted only up to 10-13 days after which the worms fed on treated mulberry leaves normally. These results indicate that Annona extracts have a potential to be used as insecticides for control of mulberry pests without affecting the silLworm if proper waiting period is followed for leaf harvesting
