The gene Yr18 for resistance to yellow rust is beleived to provide durable resistance. The cultivar Karamu, used in New Zealand, is a carrier of this gene, but during cultivation Karamu suffered occasional severe infections. This raised the possibility of races of Puccinia striiformis with virulence for Yr18.
