Non-involvement of ethylene action on the nitrate inhibition of nodulation in hypernodulation soybean [Glycine max] mutant and its parent cv. Williams

The effect of ethylene on soybean modulation was investigated in relation to the inhibitory effect of nitrate and the autoregulatory control of modulation. The precursor of ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), and the inhibitor of ethylene action, silver thiosulfate (STS) were used in this study. The hypernodulation mutant of soybean NOD1-3 and its parent, cv. Williams were cultivated in culture solution with or without NaNO3, and the above chemicals were supplied in the solution. Nodule number and the dry weight were compared with the control plant grown in N free solution. The nodule dry weight were decreased by both ACC and STS treatments, however, the ratios in nodule dry weight in total plant dry weight were not significantly influenced by these treatments with or without nitrate treatment. Therefore, it is concluded that the decrease in the nodule dry weight by ACC or STS was caused by inferior plant growth. The results obtained, did not support the hypothesis that the depression of modulation and N2 fixation in soybean by nitrate is mediated through the ethylene action. Moreover, the modulation of hypernodulation mutant was not specifically influenced by ACC treatment like Williams. This result suggests that the profuse modulation in hypernodulation mutant NOD1-3 and the autoregulatory control of modulation may not be involved in ethylene action
