The death and internode elongation of seedlings can occur often during the low temperature treatment for breaking rosette. Accordingly, the effect of temperature, illumination and irrigation during the treatment, and also that of the interval of fertilizer application prior to the treatment on the death and internode elongation of seedlings, as well as on rosette breaking were investigated. The death of seedlings occurred in the dark, and more occurred in 'Azumanokaori' than in 'Azumanoyosooi'. No death of seedlings was observed under the illumination over 70 lx. Under light condition. temperature from 5 to 15 degrees C, moisture content of compost from 14 to 35% and intervals of fertilizer application from 2 to 7 days did not affect the death of seedlings. Although the internode elongation of seedlings was not affected by illumination from 70 to 350 lx. it was increased by the treatment with 15 degrees C, moisture content over 30% of compost and shorter intervals of fertilizer application. The increase was marked, in particular, in 'Azumanokaori'. Illumination and interval of fertilizer application did not affect rosette breaking, while the treatment with 5 degrees C in both varieties and that with moisture content below 30% of compost in 'Azumanokaori' reduced the effect on rosette breaking. On such variety as 'Azumanokaori', in which the rosette is rather easily broken, it is necessary to conduct the fertilizer application prior to the treatment every 7 days, to keep the moisture content of compost from 30 to 35% during the treatment, and furthermore to treat it for 40 days at 10 degrees C or 33 days at 5 degrees C after it has been treated for 7 days at 10 degrees C in order to inhibit internode elongation while keeping the rosette breaking effect
