"North White" was bred as a small white white clover cultivar at the Tohou National Agricultural Experiment Station and was registered in the MAFF List of Official cultivars as White Clover Norin No.5 in 1994. The cultivar was synthesized from 50 maternal lines derived from eight breeding resources. Each plant was selected for small leaf size, high floral density, disease resistance, high stolon density and rapid growth of petiole. The selections for these characters were carried out under monoculture conditions in terms of two cycles of maternal selection. "North White" is larger than the small leaved "Kent Wild" and smaller than the medium leaved "Huia". Stolon density of the cultivars is the same as "Kent Wild" and "Huia". The cultivar shows good persistency under nitrogen fertilizer regimes ranging form 0 to 180 kgN/ha the clover content of 20-30% is attained because of the rapid growth of petiole after defoliation. The total dry matter yield of "North White" is 9% less than "Sonja" in Hokkaido and 10% higher than "Kent Wild" in Tohoku. "North White" shows a moderate tolerance to grazing and grows well in the presence of orchardgrass with a clover content of 17%
