The Kaltinenai Research Station of the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture was founded in 1960. It is located in the Western part of Lithuania on the Zemaiciai upland and occupies about 9200 km2. This region is under the influence of of maritime climate. The soils are leached and podzolised, heavier in texture and acid by nature. The atmospheric precipitation is much moreabundant than in other parts of the Republic. The researchers of the mentioned station have created a scientific crop management systems on the basis of their research, which is being developed further. This system (soil tillage system) is adapted to the climatic and soil conditions of the Zemaiciai Upland. It consist of the following establishment of pastures and meadows and their resowing on thebasis of perennial swards for cutting and grazing; erosion-preventive crop rotations, erosion-preventive tillage and fertilizing; integrated system of plant protection. This system meets the requirements of the environmental of protection regulations
