Adaptation of MFD [mobile flash dryer] for corn
1999
Anon.
Results of the field-testing using MFD as a complete dryer for corn showed that straight or continuous drying using air temperature of 110 to 130 deg C resulted to a high percentage of stress crack formation. Likewise, results revealed that the cooling section could not adequately cool the discharged grain. Technical and economic performance of the flash dryer as a complete dryer for corn was further evaluated. Different drying strategies were adapted to determine the best strategy suitable to the end-users. Four strategies were done during the testing. Each strategy was tested against three levels of drying temperatures (60, 80, 100 deg C). The highest percentage of moisture reduction was evident in strategy 1 using 100 deg C. However, this strategy resulted to the highest energy cost. On the other hand, strategy 4 using 80 deg C gave the lowest energy cost. Among the four strategies, treatment 4 (alternate one-hour heating and one-hour tempering) with drying temperature of 80 deg C was selected and recommended. This treatment gave the lowest energy cost and high moisture content reduction per hour. It was also recommended that a tempering bin be installed beside the dryer to maximize the dryer's capacity and to adequately cool the grain
