Potential yield contribution of the different sympodia in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Monopodia and sympodia are the major branches developed in cotton. However, four specific types of sympodia or fruit-bearing branches are produced namely: the mainstem (MS Sy), monopodium (MS Sy), axillary (Ax Sy) and secondary mainstem sympodia (Se MS Sy). Regression analysis indicated that the number of bolls per plant was significantly correlated with the number of MN Sy in the equation, Y = 15.71 + 0.86 X, where Y was the number of bolls and X the number of MS Sy, with an r square value of 72%. Likewise the number of bolls per plant was significantly dependent with the total number of fruiting forms and total sheds in the equation, Y = 0.76 + 0.99 X sub 1-1.0 X sub 2, where Y represents the number of bolls, X sub 1 the total fruiting points and X2 the total sheds, with an R square value of 96%. Potential yield contributions were 62-64% from the MS Sy, 17-18% from the Mn Sy 1 12-16% from the Ax Sy and the least 3-5% from the Se MS Sy. The highly organized and definite development pattern of the cotton plant showed that the effective boll productivity zone in upland cotton was up to MS Sy 13 at boll position number one.
