Status and highlights of socio-economics and policy research on riverine ecosystem in the Philippines

The paper presented an overview of the status of socio-economic and policy research in the fishery sector. Three hundred fifty studies were reviewed. Most of them were socio-economic benchmark information (24%), production economics (25%) and marketing/processing/utilization prices (20%) type of studies. Policy studies constituted 9% while resource economics represented 5% of the total. Least studied areas were on credit and extension, bio-economics, technology adoption and impact studies. A scarcity of socioeconomic and policy researches on riverine ecosystems was noted. Priority R & D [research and development] areas included: 1) identification and characteristics of the beneficiaries; 2) assessment of present uses of riverine ecosystem; 3) ascertaining economic potential of riverine ecosystems on sustainable basis, marketing studies and policy research on assessment of management and development activities in riverine ecosystems; and 4) studies on the politics of the use of riverine ecosystem
