About 25 species of Phyllanthus are found to possess antihepatotoxic activity. A few of them contain significant activity, as for example, P. niruri, P. amarus and P. fraternus etc. have been reported to possess significant antihepatotoxic activity against a variety of hepatotoxic agents. In addition, P. niruri has been reported to possess anti-HIV, calcium oxalate endocytosis inhibition, antispasmodic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, uterotonic and anticarcinogenic activities. In this paper we have reviewed phytochemical and pharmacological works carried out by various authors. The present article contains 56 references.
